Roehampton Veterinary Clinic

Richard Bleckman graduated with honours from Sydney University in 1978. After 2 years internship in surgery at a large Veterinary Hospital he was invited to return to the surgery department at Sydney University to do a residency in surgery, soon taking a position as lecturer in surgery and obstetrics. During this time, Mr Bleckman did research into microsurgical techniques for skin transplants. After completing 3 years as one of the orthopaedic and soft tissue referral surgeons at Sydney University, Mr Bleckman left to take up the position of Co-Director of the Sydney Wilderness Society. His love of nature led him to take an active role in preventing the destruction of some pristine rainforests where he had lived as a teenager. After a year, 7 large areas of rainforests had been protected and made National Parks. One of these campaigns received world coverage, changed the Australian government and resulted in South West Tasmania being made a World Heritage Region. Mr Bleckman returned to referral practice in Sydney, it was at this time that he started studying alternative medicine completing a diploma in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. In 1987 Richard took a sabbatical and spent a year trekking in the Himalayas. His long-term practice in the Buddhist tradition made him want to visit the countries and sights where this religion originated. This journey made a deep impression, particularly his three months in Tibet. The compassion and deep respect for life that these people hold has shown Richard how to combine compassion and skill in his practice as a Veterinary Surgeon. In 1988 Mr Bleckman returned to Britain to redesign and run Woodthorpe Veterinary Clinic. There he continued his work as a referral surgeon in orthopaedic, soft tissue and spinal surgery whilst building his skills and knowledge in Herbal Medicine. Mr Bleckman holds a 5-year diploma in Oriental Herbal Medicine and a 3-year diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine. He also holds a 5-year diploma in Psychotherapy and Physical Medicine where he has specialised in massage techniques that have a therapeutic effect. Mr Bleckman is also a member of the Functional Medicine Foundation. This is a group of physicians and research scientists in Washington who have developed a physiological model of medicine based on the developments in molecular biology that gives sound scientific bases to the use of alternative and conventional medicines. Mr Bleckman is currently completing a Masters degree in Chinese Medicine. In January 2003 he completes a 1 year diploma in ultrasonography. In April 2000, Mr Bleckman won the prestigious Animal Health Trust award of Vet of the Year. This is a national award for outstanding service to his clients and their pets.
