Masjid E Umer (Walthamstow Mosque)

For the past 23 years Masjid-E-Umer (Walthamstow Mosque)has been serving the local muslim community with the aim of educating local muslims about Islam and providing a place for salaah. Alhamdulillah, since the purchase of the existing building at 79 Queens Road in 1981, we are also able to offer the following services:

  • Five times salaah
  • Taraweeh and Eid salaah
  • Madressa to teach children about Islam
  • Funeral services

The current site of the Masjid was established in 1981 through the conversion of a Synagogue. Alhamdulillah, the muslim population of Walthamstow has now grown to such an extent that this building is now too small to accomodate all the musallees. In 1981 some concerned individuals decided to establish a Masjid in Walthamstow with the aim of educating local muslims about Islam and providing a place for salaah. A building was purchased and converted from a synagogue to a Masjid.Alhamdulillah since then our community has grown significantly and our once large Masjid is unable to facilitate the ever growing needs of the community. In 1987 planning permission was granted to extend the Masjid (as seen on the right of the above picture) to include a large wudhu room, toilet facilities, kitchen, mortuary and a small office. However, with an increase in attendance and support we are now unable to accommodate all the musallees who wish to attend. The result is that at peak periods such as Jumma, Eid, and Taraweeh salaah, musallees are having to pray in hot and cramped conditions. Those who are unable to find space inside the Masjid are even praying on the footpath! Therefore, a decision was made by the committee members and the elders of the community to demolish the existing building and construct a purpose-built Masjid. A development programme was devised just before Ramadaan 2000.Since then the project has got off to an extremely good start. Planning permission was sought from the council and was subsequently approved, and architects have finalised plans. Our only obstacle now is the collection of adequate funds to enable us to begin construction. The total cost of the project is estimated at 2m of which over 500,000 was raised in Ramadaan alone. We now need your support for the remaining 1.5m
