The Dialogue Society was founded in 1999 as a charitable organisation by second generation British-Muslims. It objectives are to promote intercultural dialogue, greater understanding and community cohesion in the United Kingdom. This work began in 1994 through a variety of initiatives including the provision of educational facilities for adults and young people; hosting cultural events; dialogue with religious and community leaders; and small scale outreach between differing faith groups – often involving the sharing and celebrating of religious events to promote greater understanding and appreciation. Whilst this early work was successful it soon became apparent that there was greater need and potential for dialogue and inter-communal working that could not be realised without a more formal organisational structure to focus efforts and provide leadership. Given this the founding volunteers came together to form the Dialogue Society. The original and continuing motivation for the Dialogue Society comes from Islam itself. The founding and existing members of the Society maintain that Islam necessitates dialogue, diversity, human rights, proactive citizenship and community cohesion. Events
